The Simmons School of Education and Human Development invites applications for tenure-line and non-tenure-line faculty positions in its departments of Applied Physiology and Sport Management, Education Policy and Leadership, Human-Centered Interdisciplinary Studies, Teaching and Learning, and Counseling. Department of Counseling

Positions: Clinical Assistant/Associate Professor in Counseling
Position Number: 52938 (non-tenure track)

The Department of Counseling is part of SMU’s Simmons School of Education and Human Development at SMU and is ranked nationally among the top 5 best-value schools (). The Program maintains approximately 300 graduate students, all of whom participate in a capstone experience that involves both a practicum in the state-of-the-art SMU Center for Family Counseling and clinical internships in community sites. The program offers three CACREP-accredited Specialties: Clinical Mental Health; Marriage, Couple & Family; and School Counseling. The program’s on-campus Center for Family Counseling offers services to the community and serves as a practica site for students prior to their clinical internships. With an emphasis on teaching, the Counseling faculty work collaboratively to sustain a nurturing and innovative environment focused on embracing diversity, pluralism, and advocacy, all program hallmarks that have contributed to its ongoing success. Faculty are committed to the well-being and success of students and each other.

This Clinical Assistant/Associate Professor of Counseling position (# 52938) is a renewable, non-tenured position with an initial three-year appointment beginning August 2027.

Responsibilities

  • Teach counseling courses and utilize generalist teaching skills for core counseling curriculum which includes culturally sustaining content and strategies across the foundational curriculum in keeping with CACREP standards.

  • Academic (individual and group) advising.

  • Curriculum development and/or oversight.

  • Provide clinical supervision of students as needed related to clinical courses.

  • Support departmental program projects and events.

  • Provide service to the School and University.

    Required Qualifications

    • Ph.D. or Ed.D. in counseling or counselor education from a CACREP-accredited program (or its equivalent) OR a doctoral degree in a related field with previous employment as a full-time faculty member in a counselor education program for a minimum of 1 full academic year before July 1, 2013.

    • Teaching experience in counseling-related courses, including clinical and counseling core curriculum.

    • Demonstrated identity as a counselor educator and clinician as evidenced by sustained participation in professional activities, scholarly activities, and service to the profession.

    • Clinical experience in the field and clinical supervisory experience.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • LPC licensure

    • LMFT licensure

    • Marriage, couple, and family counseling experience

    • One-to-three years teaching experience
